I mean the whole idea of the collection is to commemorate something that is deep underwater. Well the Titanic DNA diver is here with the RJ Octopus. The Octopus name is actually part of the “octo” theme which involves the number 8. There are special 8 sided screws in parts of the case, it is water resistant to 888 feet, and it will be part of a limited edition of 888 pieces in a few varieties.
The Titanic DNA Octopus is a pretty neat watch. It builds on the Titanic DNA core collection as well as some of the newer RJ Steampunk models. Please note that the model you see here is still a pre-production prototype. A lot of little things will change. Especially the bezel which here hasn’t been fully oxidized to achieve the proper look and color. The watch case is 46mm wide with the case claws and “X” moving through the dial. The base dial is unique on each piece as it is individually hand brushed and meant to look a bit worn. The movement decoration was the first thing about the Perrelet A1021/3 that greatly impressed me. The decoration is thorough and unique to Perrelet. There is a skeletonized automatic rotor with a piece of gold attached to the back (for weight). The center of the rotor has the Perrelet logo engraved on it. Around the edge of the movement lies perlage polishing, and the movement use blued screws. Now the best movement decoration is located on most of the exposed movement plate and are a repeating pattern of Perrelet “P” logos. Giving it a quick glance and it may look like a floral pattern, but you’ll notice the clever branding upon closer inspection. For some reason the area immediately below the balance wheel is not decorated, but it is not a big issue as the overall movement viewing experience is quite positive.I am not quite sure what the movement is inside of the watch. Perrelet recently purchased movement maker Soprod, but I think that most of their movements are currently from Swiss ETA. I am pretty sure that this watch is maybe a base ETA 2836 that has been modified as well as given a power reserve indicator, though I am not sure, whatever the case, it is a automatic mechanical Swiss movement.
The watch strap is crocodile. I accidentally referred to it as alligator in the video. My apologies for that. It gets quite supple and is soft to the touch. The contrast stitching is a nice touch. Like all animal skin leather straps, you’ll need to wear the strap in a bit for the best fit. The deployment clasp is easy to use with it’s double fold-over clasp and push-button operation. A fantastic touch is the use of perlage polish decoration on much of the exposed surface areas on the deployment. The rest is highly mirror polished.
My opinion is that it takes years of learning about watches to really appreciate the little details that Perrelet puts into its watches. It makes me think about all the people out there who have nice watches and have no perception of the little amazing details because they simply aren’t watch lovers like us, or no one pointed the features out to them. Thus, it makes me happy that this unobtrusive “nice” watch from Perrelet has a number of quality details that aren’t easy to find in watches, that I can recognize and appreciate each time I wear the watch. Overall, it is the level of refinement along with the fit and finish of this watch that are the most impressive. The style is classic and sober – with emphasis on ease of use and straight forward functionality.
Now for the most important part of the watch, the face. This is the aspect of a watch that you are going to be looking at the most, so you’ll want it to be good. Perrelet designed an interesting face for the A1021/3 Day Date power reserve. First, the sapphire crystal is about flush wit the case and uses a few good application of anti-reflective coating. The dial itself is a black with a slight sheen and done with a sunburst pattern. It is subtle, but a good touch that adds to the luxury composition of this timepiece. The Arabic hour indicators remind me of those on certain Jaeger-LeCoultre watches. They also remind me of the “gentleman traveler.” Perhaps a fellow on a train when such means of transportation was still widely popular. Each hour marker and the hands are covered in a high quality luminant – likely SuperLumiNova. As you can see in the image, they light up brightly and are easy to view. As an added benefit of the lume being so thickly applied on the hour markers, they are raised up a bit from the dial. There is a centrally located seconds hand, and the three other complications that include the date, day, and power reserve indicator.
Each of these three features is done is a different way adding a sense of variety to the dial. The case is nicely done set deep into the case with an attractive metal lined date window. Best of all is that the date disc is black to match the dial color. The little metal ring in the “porthole” is a nice touch making the date window look less like a gaping whole in the dial, and more like something that is supposed to be there. The only thing that Perrelet could have done to improve this was at a reserve magnifier lens on the rear of the crystal to help make reading the date easier. Opposite the date window is the day dial. It is very straight forward and simply – almost too simple. The small polished steel hand is clear, but feels like it should do something like underline the correct day. Again this could be just speculation, and Perrelet tired this with the present dial being the optimal day dial presentation. Lastly you have the Power reserve indicator that adds the splash of red color to the dial. You’ll find that most luxury dressy watch have some hint of a third color on their dials to make them more interesting, red is a typical choice and “works as advertised” to spruce up dial designs. One of the nice things about a cushion shaped case versus as tonneau case is that you can have hands that are never too short. The hands here are the right length for this style watch and exhibit one addition feature that is pretty hard to find these days. Like classic watches, both the minute and seconds hand are bend down a bit toward the dial at the tips. This helps when reading the watch at angles as it more precisely shows you where the hands are falling on the dial. Like I said, this is a rare feature to find in today’s watch and I really like that Perrelet included them in the watch. Many of these minor details that I have been pointing out are certainly indicative of one major thing: that Perrelet has watches designed by actual watch makers who are familiar with the basic principles of making a watch. Honestly, this is not always easy to come by.

The case is a curious shape for many of you. It is called a “cushion” – for what should be obvious reasons. Think of a chair cushion, or a couch pillow. I know it is not the most glamorous term as applied to a luxury watch, but can you think of a better name? This is the first cushion style watch for me, and I actually like how it looks on my wrist. I think the shape is more flattering than a tonneau case (rectangular cushion), and I appreciate the symmetry of the even side lengths here more. The case a coined/column design on the side on the side that helps fill the space with a pleasant decoration. In true sophisticated watch fashion, this theme is continue into the double fold-over deployment clasp on the strap. You can tell how the lugs are highly curved in order to not look to big on your wrist and have a retro styling to them. The different polishes on the case (mirrored, brushed) are done in a high quality manner, and the overall fit and finish of the case is really top-notch. I really like how the crown has the beautiful looking relief of the Perrelet logo. The crown is not screw-down on the watch, which I think I would have preferred. Though maybe this is because I am a diving watch kinda guy. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters which is standard for more dressy watches of this ilk.

The Perrelet A1021/3 is a luxury watch made like luxury watches used to be made like. Offering quality materials to represent the presentation of the time in as clear and easy a way possible and adding a few useful complications. Luxury these days can take many forms, many of them purely for boldness or experimentation. This watch is out of another era in its philosophy. I will also that this cushion-shaped Day Date Power Reserve watch is not one that I would run up to in a store case and get excited about it. Maybe that is because it is so function forward in presentation. Thus, the timepiece does not scream “buy me,” but rather it grows on you after you give it a chance. Living with the watch for a bit I have become much more fond of it. It looks good and has lots of little luxury points that you can continue to enjoy for a long time – especially after those other watches with too much personality lose their novelty or fall out of style. These Perrelet watches will still be around. This same A1021 line of watch is also available with Roman numeral hands and hour markers instread of the Arabic numerals. Retail price is about $4,000, with the street price being less.

“Ribbit…” Here is the first derivative watch based on the MB&F Horological Machine # 3 (HM3) (which I wrote about here). While MB&F releases about one brand new watch each year, they also have special models based on their standard collection of Horological Machines. This watch will be known as the MB&F HM3 “The Frog.” There are two versions of the watch – one in a darker, PVD black coated titanium with a green toned 22k gold automatic rotor (12 pieces), and a titanum version with a blue 22k gold automatic rotor (20 pieces). That is a total of 32 HM3 Frog watches in total. Both look pretty interesting, with this bug-eyed (I mean amphibian) eyed watch having no analogs in the watch world.
Functions:
Hour and day/night indicator on one dome (aluminium dome rotating in 12 hours)
Minutes on second dome (aluminium dome rotating in 60 minutes)
Date around the movement
Unlike the two versions of the original HM3 (the Sidewinder and Starcruiser), which had straps attached to them in two orientations, The Frog has one orientation, that probably suits the design best. You can piece the movement through the top and bottom mounted sapphire crystals. You will also find a date display ring on the top of the watch as well. A small arrow on the case tells you were to read the date.
Why the “Frog?” According the MB&F one of their customers said the two dome-like structures on the original HM3 looked like frog’s eyes sticking out of water – as frogs enjoy being in water with their eyes exposed to look for prey. If you read my above article you’ll see that while I agree the domes looked like eyes, they are more like robot eyes. So MB&F liked the idea enough that they wanted to make a watch that truly indulged this frog fantasy. The project was much more complicated than simple changing the domes which are used for the time (one for hours, the other for the minutes). The problem was that on the original HM3 the hour dome turned once each 24 hours, but the design of The Frog called for it to turn once each 12 hours. This apparently was cause for lots of movement changes. Plus, the domes are heavier and mounted much differently. The dome “eyes” are under a perfect dome of sapphire crystal in all black and white colors. There is a tear drop shape on the top (inside the crystal) that indicates whether the dome is used for the minutes or hours. The pointed tip of the tear drop indicates where you look to read the minutes or hours.

Some people will love the beauty and imagination of the watch. Others will consider the design perhaps a bit frightening. Large creature like bulging eyes coming out of a mechanical metal instrument in luxury materials. It is a weird watch of course – probably the weirdest looking piece to come from MB&F yet, and that is actually saying a lot.

My opportunity to view the MB&F Frog watch was preliminary, so I don’t have all the details such as the price, though you will find tech specs from MB&F below. The HM3 Frog will be in a limited edition (like all MB&F watches), and will have initial inventory likely available in and around Singapore where MB&F watches are highly prized. Availability starts this month (May 2010). MB&F considers it a “wacky” version of the HM3, and 32 collectors I am sure will be delighted. And there again there is that mouth. Large, and gaping. Not hungry, just expectant. I look inside – often to just the find date? I really wanted something more special in there. The rest of the watch dials are rich with textured and decoration. Bertolucci seems to find it a cardinal sin to have boring looking dials. You’ll mostly find shapely Arabic numerals, polished applied hour indicators, and dials with all manner of patterning due the visage of a luxury item. Seriously, once you go fancy looking watch dial, it is hard to go back to something flat and printed.
I like Bertolucci watches mostly, they are nicely made and designed. Often with quartz movements, but good lookers for the fashion crowd. Though these watches are a bit to ‘mouthy’ for my taste. What they have done is create a looped bridge over the dial and separated the sapphire crystal into two pieces. Hard to do that and get good watch resistance still – expensive as well. Bertolucci feels that their Giro line (which includes most of these watches) is “casual chic.” Perhaps it is more “gaping maw chic?”

I really loved making these visual comparisons – it brought me lots of joy. People at Bertolucci are gonna be irritated a bit I am sure (but those with good humor will enjoy it, and I hope you do t00). I am upset that you really don’t see Bertolucci watches in the US anymore. Why, cause we make fun of stuff? It is a brand I would like to see come back in the states. We will see how this whole “economy” thing pans out over the next few years.
While most of the models have Swiss Ronda 5020.B quartz movements, the gold model here (also available in steel) have Swiss ETA Valjoux 7753 automatic movements in them. You can see that the layout of the dials differs a bit on those. Case shape is quite elegant, and so is the metal bracelet. While the watches have alligator strap options, Bertolucci did such a nice job with the gapless link metal bracelets (complete with fancy alternating polished on the links). There is a curvy, almost organic feel to the bracelet that I quite like – almost the opposite of the angular style of the iconic Rolex Submariner bracelet.
It is entirely possible that my warped mind sees watches differently than other people do. Over the course of my writing about Bertolucci watches, they have always looked interesting, but a bit strange to me. I finally connected a few of the things that some of their common Chronograph models remind of me. Maybe you agree? You can tell that these watches are all part of the same family. Some or all are Bertoluccia Giro (All-Black Giro see here), and some are just called Bertolucci Quartz Chronograph watches. No matter the name, they each have large, gaping mouths. Why? I couldn’t tell you. Though here are some of the possible design influences. My favorite is near the bottom of course. Each is highly disturbing in its own way. Bertolucci might need to occasionally revise their “Mediterranean Inspiration” slogan… to something else.
Each watch is in a 42 mm wide steel case, except for the 18k rose gold model below. There are a number of models in the collection, including a two-tone version. Actually, there are versions with the mouth, but without a chronograph complication. Those predictably look a bit less weird. Dark dial, or light dial, Bertolucci has you covered. Even if you want a little diamond action sprinkled in. While these are technically men’s models, I would say that the design on some of the diamond versions looks unisex as best – watches like this would fare well on feminine wrists.

Using the movement is nice. The crown makes a bit of an odd noise when you use it for winding, but it feels like it is contacting the gears securely. Operating the watch is simple, and the chronograph pushers have a secure, if not heavy feel to them. The 6 hour chronograph works just as expected. Overall the movement feels a lot like a slightly less expensive version of the Valjoux 7750, which it essentially is from a hierarchy perspective. There are certainly no 7750 based watches at this price. Pictured is an ETA C01.211 movement, but with a Tissot logo (which is also a Swatch Group brand).
Most people have very positive associations with the Swatch brand. Either it was some special Swatch watch in your past, or the friendly and fun designs you’ve been seeing your whole life. If you are like me, you have also been one to give Swatch watches as gifts as they are usually always appreciated, and a good value at that. Many hardcore watch lovers feel like they might have out-grown Swatch watches based on what we remember of them. But unless you have been keeping a close eye on Swatch, you might not realize that they have released some pretty interesting models (even a solid platinum Swatch watch at one point). Remember that Swatch and the Swiss movement making giant ETA are connected at the hip being part of the same group. This means that Swatch gets the benefit of having all the cool movements ETA makes with priority. Plus, Swatch does big volume production, meaning they can invest more into the production process. Any little guy trying to make watches like this would have to charge an arm and a leg. As such, with an interesting and highly complex design, Swatch is still able to sell these at a good price.

For a lot of people who are interested in entering the world of mechanical watches for the first time, a cool Swatch like this is a good choice. It is also a good choice for people who aren’t really prepared to spend higher “luxury” amounts on more expensive mechanical watches. Priced at between $370 – $380, the Swatch Automatic Chrono is an incredible value for what you can. Plus, you really can’t find Swiss made mechanical chronograph movements for less! There is a world of people out there that are destined to enjoy these Swiss watches,with Swiss style, without the Swiss price.
While these Swatch Automatic Chrono watches aren’t the first mechanical Swatch watches, they are of the first with this new ETA C01.211 automatic mechanical chronograph movement that is based on the classic Lemania 5100. The movement was designed to be durable, accurate, and not too expensive to make. Like the original Lemania 5100, the new C01.211 has some plastic pieces in the movement – but those should have no negative effect on its durability or functionality in the long run. All the important parts of in metal of course. See some of them in what looks to be brass. However, the escapement is in some fancy synthetic material. Overall the movements are comprised of 184 parts, have a 46 hour power reserve, and feature the time, date, and a 6 hour chronograph. In the back of the watch you can view the movement through a mostly semi-opaque crystal window, with two clear areas for where a particular gear is, and above the escapement. The movement is interesting with a large sized automatic rotor. The cloudy glass look of the caseback is likely meant to distract from much of the movement that is not really decorated. It is an interesting approach.

Each of the watches has a case which is mostly made out of a high-grade plastic. This is Swatch remember? They have a reputation to maintain. The cases are enhanced with other elements such as metal bezels and casebacks. The plastic used for the case is very tough and also translucent in a cloudy sort of way. Size of the watch is actually deceptively large at about 45mm. It wears smaller though looking ample, but not too large on your wrist. The case is also water resistant to 30 meters.
Aside from different straps, the watches really differentiate themselves in terms of visual style. None of them look the same thanks to Swatch’s desire to make all sorts of bezels, and hands, and wild looking dials for the watches. Some are easier to read than other, and each one has its own distinct character. Given that each is within $10 of each other, the best one to get is which ever one you like the most.
The Swatch Automatic Chrono line is placed within the Swatch Irony collection, but that is hard to determine. Instead, Swatch presents us with five models in the new Automatic Chrono line – each the same in function but in a different skin. My intent is for this discussion to cover the whole line, with emphasis on this particular model, known as the Swatch Automatic Chrono Silver Class watch Ref. SVGK401G. Other models have sub names such as “Right Track, Blunge, Sign in the Sky, and Simply Pure.”
The game changing watch has changed its game. Swatch is one of the most popular names in watches – ever. Probably as well known as Rolex or Seiko, maybe even more do. Swatch is almost single-handedly to thank for saving the Swiss watch industry. It was the high volume sale of pop culture friendly Swiss quartz watches that fed the high-end mechanical Swiss watch making world we have and appreciate today. While this is a bit of an over simplification and there are other details, the bottom line is that Swatch should have a special place in the hearts of watch lovers everywhere.
From an aesthetic perspective the watches are all fun looking. Swatch utilizes some very fancy machinery to create interesting designs on the dials that are colorful and provocative. Swatch has succeeded in making a watch that is fun to look and uplifting. This Silver Class model has contrast finished Arabic numeral hour markers and prominent chronograph subdials. While the numbers are hard to read in certain lighting situations, the black hands with lume covered tips do an excellent job of contrasting with the with the dial for a nicely legible look. The chapter ring serves as a tachymeter scale, and Swatch places an orange colored chronograph seconds hand in the middle of the watch to add a splash of color to what would otherwise be a monochromatic look. The new Guer Man Trace watch uses a log of wood as the watch box and case. It is even part of the presentation, and I believe that Guer Man includes the pictured pedestal where the log watch box can reside. There is also the little porthole on the log to see the watch face, turning it into some oddly impractical pedestal clock. “What time is it? Not sure, go check log.” Pretty wild, pretty weird, and pretty fun to see stuff like this right?
The movement of the watch is a Swiss made automatic ETA 2789. I don’t know much about this rare movement, but Guer Man gives it a nice personalized rotor and uses various types of gold and steel in the movement. I wonder if the movement is particularly accurate given the large size of the balance wheel. The watches will also be as part of a limited edition. By the looks of it, no more than 100 pieces. Also on the dial, is a large “quality” ruby set at 12 o’clock. No matter how cliche it is, nice jewels on a watch face are always appreciated. Know what I mean? In addition to many other details, pricing is still a bit of a mystery as this point. I imagine it will be quite optimistic, as “art” watches tend to have that “designer premium” place on then. As they deserve is someone is moved enough emotionally by the look. Oh,Rolex Air King, and you can be sure that every watch box for the Trace is going to be different as you can’t find these natural looking logs that look the same. Not too much is currently known about the Guer Man Trace watch or the company. Their website isn’t even up and running yet. The watch was apparently design as a collaboration between an artist and engineer. Pretty standard story, but the result is always better when the two types collaborate versus going it alone. The watch employs a lot of gold as well as other natural materials. The bezel and dial look to be some type of stone. Plus,Tag Heuer Aquaracer, around the sides of the watch are many little columns, also appearing to be made of stone, and are reportedly hand made. The case of the watch is in rose gold, and nothing I can write about its shape will be better than simply looking at it. While the case is totally round, the case is oblong and makes for an interesting look. The who design reminds me of what a Sarpaneva watch would be if they took a totally different direction. You can love or leave the face of the watch. It is interesting and pleasant in a quiet sort of way. It makes me think of what the inside of fancy banks look like with the marble stone and applied gold markers. You might see this as being a wall clock applied directly on to stone in a bank building right?
